Fair warning to all the EcoBoost Mustang owners on Oppo (I know there’s a few of you, and I’m especially jealous of you if you have Grabber Blue!): EcoBoost Mustangs are worth next to nothing on trade-in. Ford made too many, there’s more supply than demand and they have no value. I got $17k for my fully loaded 2015 Recaro Premium with only 24k miles on it. My advice: Keep it if you can unless you absolutely have to get rid of it.

I’m seeing the same sort of depreciation on my BRZ - basically, its value dropping steadily along with my payments. The two are about equal right now, which is good, but seeing as how I’m about to finish year 3 with that car, which I bought new in 2014, I can’t help but wonder if a lease might have made more sense, since I’m already paying the depreciation.
It’s something I’ll consider for my next daily driver. But not for a while. Like your Mustang, it still doesn’t make economic sense to unload the BRZ.

Same for mine. I’m even paying extra on a 0% loan to get right-side-up on the damn thing. Right now I think I owe an even $16k and have 32k miles on my ‘14 Limited. I wouldn’t get that much on trade and would probably be hard-pressed to sell it privately for that much.

I stand by my theory that everybody who wanted a BRZ/FR-S and was willing to follow through and actually buy one already has one. That, plus the fact that Toyobaru is unwilling to introduce a TRD/STi model with the horsepower boost so many people want, means there simply isn’t much demand for our cars.
It’s a very different situation than the Mustang, since Ford built about eleventy zillion of those, but the end result is the same. High supply or low demand both mean low value.

These types of cars with this type of depreciation are exactly why I recommend leases to certain people depending on the car they want. At the very least, you turn in the lease if they dropped like a rock and you don’t want it, or if you want to keep it buy it out on a short loan. Which is why for the Fiat I took the lease option over purchasing. Fool me once, etc.
Unfortunately for me, despite throwing lots of extra money on top of the car payment, I didn’t realize the depreciation was this steep and was slightly behind on what I owed versus what it was worth.

Fiat 124 Spider Classica. I can’t stand the Abarth front bumper, nor can I justify the price difference for the Abarth. All the Abarth offers that I would want would be the rear bumper with the little side vents, LSD and optional Recaros (lol good luck finding one with Recaros though).
I saved $10k over the Abarth, which given the MX-5 aftermarket and the 500 Abarth engine aftermarket, I could easily surpass the Abarth with that saved money.

Me justifying it: Have had a bad streak last couple months, so this is me forcing my fate to change. My Ecoboost was a mechanical lemon, too big, didn’t handle well enough, poor power-to-weight ratio, awful MPG, paint was a pain to keep clean, and I could go on.
The real reason: I miss my Sky and wanted the Fiat. So I got one and it made me happy.

Nope, Classica. Standard radio like the MX-5 Sport has, and with a manual transmission. Couldn’t justify the price increase of the Abarth and I dislike the Abarth front end.

The Boostang was not really my style, whereas the Fiata is 100% my style. I gave the EcoBoost a nice run but it was probably the worst new car I’ve ever owned and I’m glad to be rid of it.
Besides, MX-5 Is Always The Answer and Fiata Is Also The Answer. :)

Did you drive both of them? Apparently in addition to the extra power, noise, and the differential the Abarth also gets different suspension tuning compared to the standard models. Though I guess with the aftermarket support that the Miata platform gets factory setup doesn’t matter a whole bunch.
So why buy a 124 when you own an ND?

I have test driven all three trims of the 124 in the last few months. The Abarth makes fun noises compared to the standard two, although it doesn’t sound as good as a 500 Abarth or 4c. The Abarth’s suspension felt identical to the MX-5's Club suspension that I drove early last year. While the Abarth / Club suspension is a vast improvement over the standard suspension, but it’s just shocks/springs/sways which I plan to go aftermarket (Good-Win Racing) with regardless of what trim, so paying extra for an upgraded item I plan on replacing anyways seemed silly.
124 makes fun turbo sounds and is the closest to a brand new Saturn Sky Redline. Also, I think the 124 looks far classier than the ND, and the turbo is a ton of fun around town. The ND is very quickly heading down the path of being a full AutoX / track car with my growing plans for it, so having a reasonable DD seemed nice. Plus the girlfriend loves to take the ND all the time, so it’s easier having both as well.
They are both great roadsters, so why try to decided between the two when I could have both?

Don’t get me wrong, the EcoBoost Mustang is a wonderful sports car, especially for it’s price - it’s just my specific one was a total nightmare plagued by brake system failures, engine issues, electrical gremlins, fit and finish issues and a few other issues plus poor customer service trying to get those issues fixed.

Hoping to have impression posts for the 124, ND, Boostang and my former Sky all posted up over the next 2-3 weeks. Honestly, the choice between a Fiata, Miata and Boostang would be a real tough one.

Luckily it’s like 90% Mazda, with the only Fiat bits being the engine (which seems to be dead reliable according to the 500 forums)! Best of both worlds, Japanese reliability/build quality, and sexy Italian styling.

Nice you’ll have to let us know how they compare, I ordered an identical ND before they came out but got impatient waiting and came up with reasons to buy an NC instead, but the Fiata is appealing to me now especially after hamster had a go in one, I much prefer the NC trans to the skyactiv one so that’s a big selling point. I’m hoping with usual fiat depreciation I can upgrade to one in a couple years.

If my next daily driver turns out to be a GTI, I’d consider leasing it - especially if it’s a DSG and maintenance is included. I have a long commute and there’s a mileage limit, but that would be offset by my motorcycle and Jetta ute project at other times. It’s all a matter of whether the numbers add up.

Quick note: after driving both for a bit, the NC transmission is definitely superior to the ND Skyactive transmission. Superior in just about every single way. Shifts better, feels better, short throw, and it definitely feels beefy/strong and makes the ND transmission feel very fragile, almost like glass.

Yeah I had a 2015 mazda3 and didn’t mind it until I traded it for the NC and remembered what hydraulic steering felt like. Is the 124 electric also?
Z (ND + Cancer Fighter)

01/31/2017 at 15:11 | 1 |
I expect the base EcoBoost Stangs will be worth around 10-12k retail in about two years, given their current massive depreciation rate. Cheap EcoBoost fun for everyone is looming soon!
Z (ND + Cancer Fighter)

01/31/2017 at 15:14 | 1 |
I believe the 124 is also electric, at least the Fiat site says it is, but it does not feel electric. Especially when compared to the MX-5 ND, it feels much heavier and more like a hydraulic rack than an electric rack. Only at less than 5-7 mph does it feel remotely electric. Steering feel is much better in the 124 because of this in my opinion. Also, the 124 has a much nicer, thicker steering wheel that is an huge improvement over the ND wheel.

Nope, I don’t think I could even make rent with the megar Fiat sales around here, and I’d be no good as a salesperson. The electric steering just happens to be one of the main faults of the ND, and the 124 handles that better.
I just like little roadsters and cars in general.
